About the centre

Our aim is to provide an informal environment where teachers and technicians can explore Apple technologies regardless of experience or expertise. We host regular hands-on workshops where teachers learn to use technologies to enhance creativity in the classroom, right across the curriculum. Our own staff host most sessions, but we also invite teachers and technicians with specialist skills to present and run workshops throughout the year across all of the following subjects:

Mac 101 17th November

This workshop is ideal for all new users of mac computers, we will help you to familiarise yourself with the range of tools which come installed on your new mac, how to convert your existing knowledge of using windows to the mac environment and help to dispel the most common myths of mac use. In 2 hours we will cover the basics of the mac operating system, covering both Snow Leopard and Lion, give you a tour of the iLife suite which includes iMovie, Garageband, iWeb and iDVD and answer any questions you may have about using your mac.

Creating movies in the class room: An Introduction 23rd November 2011

This workshop is the first of three workshops focusing on movie creation and will introduce you to iMovie ’11, the movie editing software which comes installed on every new Mac. iMovie ’11 has made it easier then ever to create great looking videos in the class room. In 2 hours we will cover the basics of editing with iMovie and show you how to import your footage, add music, special effects and titles to create a finished movie. We will also take you through the various built in themes and wizards and finish off the session by showing you how to share your creations with the world.

Creating music in the class room: An Introduction 1st December

This workshop is the first of two workshops focusing on music creation and will introduce you to the power of Garageband ’11, the music creation software which comes installed on every new mac. Garageband ’11 makes it even easier to create fantastic music in the class room. In 2 hours we will show you how to create great sounding music using the built in instruments and loops, how to create the perfect score for your movies and how to turn your mac into a recording studio.

An Alternative To MS Office 8th December 2011

This workshop will focus on the iWork ’09 suite which includes Pages, Keynote and Numbers, Apple’s alternative to the MS Office suite.
In 2 hours we will show you how open existing office documents and transform them into something that will strike a chord with your students. Use Keynote to create a high quality presentation using cinema style transitions and effects, use Pages to create stunning publications or e-books and use Numbers to present data in a new dynamic way. Finally we will finish off the session by showing you the various different ways you can share your publications and how you can continue your work on the move with the iOS apps.

Creativity in the class room: Creating a digital portfolio 12th January 2012

This workshop will look at using all of iLife ’11 together, to create a fully interactive web site which then can be published for the rest of the world to see. In 2 hours we will show you how to use iWeb to create a digital portfolio of your students work, including how to pull projects from iMovie, Garageband and iPhoto as well as the iWork ’09 suite of applications.

Using animation to Tell A Story 26th January 2012

Animation is a great way to encourage students to create a story and then transfer it to the big screen. Using a combination of iStopMotion, Garageband and iMovie we will take you through the process of creating a stop motion masterpiece.

Recent events

An Introduction To Podcasting - 2nd November 2010

This course will introduce the concept of podcasting in a school environment and how Garageband can be used to record and edit a podcast to a high professional standard. We will also look at the different ways a school can host their podcasts.
 

Using a VLE to increase productivity in the classroom - 9th November 2010

This course will introduce the VLE system MOODLE, showing how courses and resources can be put together quickly and easily to guide students in the classroom.
 

Using animation to tell a story - 30th November 2010

This course will look at using iStopMotion, Garageband and iMovie to create an animation which follows a script or storyboard and how it can be used to promote literacy.

Wednesday 21st July; Guest teacher / trainer, Apple Distinguished Educator, Oscar Sringer ran two advanced movie making workshops exploring the more advanced features in iMovie 09 and then transitioning into Final Cut Pro. Attendees included several media teachers, two lecturers from Chichester University and some staff from the local authority. Even on one of the hottest days of the year, everyone lasted the whole session and learned loads.

 

Wednesday 31st March, Apple distinguished Educator, Mike Watkinson ran a series of sessions throughout the afternoon and evening featuring Garageband and Logic Studio. We were joined by a range of music teachers and technicians, heads of music and the IT Director from a new local academy. We learned many new techniques and discovered that Garageband really can fulfil the GCSE music syllabus. Mike also demonstrated the power of Logic, time stretching and quantising real audio. The feedback was excellent and Felpham will now be hosting GarageBand and Logic workshops on a regular basis.
